Vehicle Speed
Detection System

Smart surveillance for speed compliance across highways and urban routes.

An AI-powered solution built to NHAI standards for highways, expressways and cities. It monitors over-speeding and under-speeding, delivers real-time alerts, and produces court-ready evidence with automated e-challan through NIC.

Capabilities

More than speed. Full vehicle intelligence.

Beyond measuring speed, VSDS recognises plates, vehicle types, registration class and make-model on the edge.

ANPR plate recognition evidence
01

ANPR

96% accuracy across plate types: standard, non-standard, green, red and hand-painted, including two-wheeler, Bharat Series and EV plates.

Vehicle classification evidence
02

Vehicle Classification

Automatically categorises vehicles into 9 types: 2W, 3W, 4W, Bus, Truck, Mini LCV, LCV, Goods Auto and Tractor.

Plate classification evidence
03

Plate Classification

Identifies Private, Commercial, Electric and Unknown vehicle registrations.

Make and model recognition evidence
04

Make & Model

Detects 35+ global and Indian automotive brands with specific model identification.

Violations

What a gantry catches.

Every violation is recorded with the plate, the measured speed, the lane and a timestamped evidence image, so a challan holds up without anyone re-checking the footage.

Lane discipline violation evidence
01

Lane Discipline Violation

Lane misuse or striping violations captured with the plate and evidence image.

Mobile phone use violation evidence
02

Mobile Phone Use

Driver using a phone while moving, linked to the number plate.

No helmet pillion violation evidence
03

No Helmet Pillion

Pillion passenger without a helmet on a two-wheeler.

No helmet rider violation evidence
04

No Helmet Rider

Rider without a helmet, captured with the plate.

No seatbelt driver violation evidence
05

No Seatbelt Driver

Driver without a seatbelt in a four-wheeler.

No seatbelt passenger violation evidence
06

No Seatbelt Passenger

Front passenger without a seatbelt, logged with the event.

Non HSRP plate violation evidence
07

Non HSRP

Plates that do not conform to HSRP standards, including non-standard formats.

Over speeding violation evidence
08

Over Speeding

Speed above the posted limit, measured by 4D radar at the gantry.

Poor visibility condition evidence
09

Poor Visibility

Fog, heavy rain or low light conditions that reduce corridor visibility.

Stalled vehicle violation evidence
10

Stalled Vehicle

A vehicle stopped in a live lane, raising the risk of a secondary incident.

Triple riding violation evidence
11

Triple Riding

More than two people on a two-wheeler, flagged automatically.

Under speeding violation evidence
12

Under Speeding

Speed below the corridor minimum: a hazard on high-speed routes.

Wrong direction violation evidence
13

Wrong Direction

Vehicle moving against the traffic flow on the carriageway.

Core features

Built for corridor speed compliance.

Types

Spot and section speed

Instantaneous speed at the gantry, plus average speed between two points.

Up to 60m detection

ANPR and radar coverage across the capture zone, per lane.

Coverage

Lanes plus shoulder

Multiple-lane monitoring including the shoulder, not just the carriageway.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is VSDS?

VSDS is a speed detection and enforcement system that combines a camera with a 4D Doppler radar to measure vehicle speeds and detect traffic violations. It generates evidence images with speed readings for automated challan generation.

How does it detect speed?

The 4D Doppler radar measures the speed of each vehicle across all lanes. It can track up to 120 vehicles simultaneously. The camera captures evidence images tied to each speed reading.

Can it detect violations beyond speeding?

Yes. VSDS also detects no helmet (rider and pillion), no seatbelt (driver and passenger), triple riding, wrong lane, wrong direction, and vehicles not allowed on the stretch.

Does it support both spot speed and section speed?

Yes. Spot speed is measured at the gantry location. Section speed is calculated using the travel time between two VIDES gantries (typically 10 km apart), as specified in the NHAI 2023 circular.

Can different speed limits be set for different vehicle types?

Yes. The system supports separate speed limits per vehicle class. For example, commercial vehicles can be enforced at 80 kmph while cars are enforced at 120 kmph on the same stretch.

Does it work at night?

Yes. The system uses built-in IR and Pulse IR technology for clear evidence capture in complete darkness. Night-time seatbelt detection for both driver and co-driver achieves 96% accuracy.

How is evidence generated?

Each violation produces a timestamped, geo-tagged evidence image showing the vehicle, plate (with OCR), speed reading, violation type, and lane position. This evidence is designed to stand scrutiny in court.

What hardware is needed?

A Recon Global Shutter camera, a 4D Doppler radar, a Local Processing Unit (LPU), and optionally a speed display board. All components mount on a standard gantry.

Measure it. Prove it. Enforce it.
